Get Excited about Practicing Guitar Again

We all love guitar, but how come sometimes getting better at the guitar feels like such a struggle? We know we want to improve, but there are periods where it just doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. And sitting down to practice guitar feels more like a chore than a sense of relief.

Many people wish they can just magically start playing the guitar like their favorite artists without the hard work and diligence that goes into it.

And that’s it, without the hard work and diligence, being playing to play the guitar would be a lot less fun.

Being able to progress and develop your own sound and personality on the guitar, finding your own confidence with the instrument is what will help you become a musician.

Now – I know you do want to progress, so why is it such a struggle to get the motivation to practice the guitar?

Do You Have a Guitar Teacher?

First thing I’ve got to ask is, do you currently have a guitar teacher to help you? Often we see people who have been trying for 10, 20 years trying to play the guitar, and each time they give up because there is no one showing them the right way.

When you are learning the guitar, the road ahead is not one you know – so when there are obstacles, it’s difficult for you to get yourself out of them, or see what the best path is going to be.

Having someone to guide you is going to help you massively with knowing exactly how and what you should be practicing so you can focus on the fun of learning instead.

Great, you’ve already got a teacher!

That’s awesome, and now I’ve got to tell you what you probably already know.

Some things, specifically things that involve our brain and muscles takes time. Just like going to the gym in a week won’t get a six pack, neither will practicing straight for a week is going to make you sound exactly like your favorite artists.

What you can start to appreciate is, I’m getting at doing this specific thing over the week, and appreciate the small amount of progress that you make.

The sense of appreciation and gratitude really helps you to add up all these small pieces and when you start comparing your progress in 3 to 6 months time, you may be surprised at how you have progressed in that time.

Practicing guitar is also something you have practice too! Ironic I know. But the better you get at practicing, the more progress you will make in a short amount of time.

Focus on small pieces each week – and that helps your brain to focus and develop those specific skills only. You could do a fretboard week – where you just focus on improving your fretboard knowledge. A phrasing week, where you work on the sound of your guitar playing for example.

That will help your brain to develop muscle memory much faster than trying to practice a hundred different things.

Start to learn to appreciate the periods of slow growth as something big to come, and you will find yourself enjoying and being excited about practicing guitar again.

If you need someone to hold your hand and guide you down the right paths for your guitar playing, finding a guitar teacher is going to help you a lot.
