How To Guarantee Results When Practicing Guitar
Disclaimer: only you are responsible for your results. I cannot guarantee anything. This approach is considered a way for you to guarantee and ensure your progress when practicing guitar.
There is one very important LAW I want everyone to know about how to guarantee results when practicing guitar. It’s called Parkinson’s Law. I’m sure some of you have heard of it, but haven’t thought about it in regards to practicing. Parkinson’s Law states “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”. The first time I heard this my jaw hit the floor. It is so ridiculously obvious, yet so easily overlooked. What’s even better is that this can be applied to any area of life, so why not apply it to reaching our guitar playing and musical goals? Keep reading because we are going to dig a little deeper.
When practicing to learn a new song, technique, the fretboard, etc. most people will not set a deadline on it’s completion. There is a vague sense at best of how long it will take to master. To fix this MASSIVE PROBLEM simply set a deadline for yourself AND stick to it.
With deadlines, we determine how long it will take. It will force you to get down to business and get it done. This can seem scary to most people because what happens if the date comes and we haven’t reached our goal or accomplished the task? Well, nothing really, other than you will have gotten a whole lot better by applying yourself to try and reach the goal. You wouldn’t have failed, you just either didn’t set a realistic deadline(no big deal) or you didn’t commit to the deadline.
To fix this you must actually want to achieve the goal and you must have accountability or else it is too easy to push the deadline back. When I’m under pressure and know I have to get something done by a certain date everything changes. My perception is that I will regret not doing whatever I have to do to reach the deadline and I get to work. This alone will make a drastic change in how you approach practicing guitar and in who you are.
Sit not convinced? Then think about it this way. If there is no deadline or you are not committed to the deadline then the project will stretch itself out into forever. Never accomplishing a simple and clear goal is not my idea of exciting. In fact it’s utterly horrifying or at least it should feel that way, because that horrifying feeling will move you to into serious action.
What you can do now
Start by making a list of the things you want to achieve in your guitar playing. Could be anything you want to do. Play 50 of your favorite songs, shred your favorite guitar solo, record your own music, perform at your favorite music venue, etc. Then prioritize these by importance to you. Next choose what you think will be the most exciting or important one to you and break it down into smaller tasks.
If you want to learn your favorite guitar solo then you will need to first simply get the music for it or even better, learn it by ear if you are ready for that. Next figure out what techniques you will need to learn it. Now determine how long it will take to learn the song and play it at full speed. Each part of the process must get it’s own deadline, not just the final goal. Write down what you will do this week, next week, etc. Then get to work.
